Glendale Agricultural Society is pleased to confirm the sixth Children’s Countryside Day will be held at The Glendale Showfield, Wooler on Thursday 10th June 2010, by kind permission of the Lilburn Estate Farming Partnership. The day is free of charge to schools and is aimed mainly at Year 3 and Year 4 pupils. Any first school from Northumberland and North Tyneside is eligible to apply for places. The event is specifically planned by the Glendale Agricultural Society to give children of all abilities aged between 5 and 9 years, first hand experience of rural life.

The event is organised by a very small but enthusiastic committee of volunteers from Glendale Agricultural Society who are passionate about delivering this excellent event to the school children of Northumberland and North Tyneside. The exhibitors are a cross section of local and national businesses, organisations and individuals who also give their time for free and we are assisted on the day by 50 volunteer stewards from the local community. The event could not continue without their time, effort and patience on the day!

This year’s event is now full with 39 schools attending the day with 1550 schoolchildren due to visit us on 10th June.

The day incorporates over 50 countryside-based industries and the children will have the opportunity to see farm animals and machinery close up and meet a variety of individuals and businesses that are part of rural life. Answers will be provided to questions such as:

• Where does milk and ice cream come from?
• How do you get wool for jumpers?
• How is honey made?
• Where do eggs come from?
• Does a horse wear shoes?

Alongside the usual countryside exhibits and farm animals there will also be a focus on “The Changing Landscape” and we are very fortunate to have substantial support from the Northumbria Regional Flood Defence Committee and the New Leader Project to help us create another excellent event. The initial defra funding for the event has come to an end and the event now has to be self-financing in order to continue so we are particularly grateful to those businesses and organisations who have funded this year’s event and made it possible to go ahead.
