YOUNGSTERS who attended a summer course could win prizes at the Glendale Show this Bank Holiday Monday.
First school children throughout the North East were given free gifts at Glendale Educational Countryside days during the summer term, which Northumberland County Council helped organise.
The children enjoyed learning about the environment and received bright green shopping bags with a ‘Recycle For Northumberland’ logo.
The youngsters are being encouraged to use the bags over and over again when they and their parents go shopping, as well as to recycle bottles, paper and jars.
Around 2,400 bags were handed out in June and there will be spot-prizes – worth £10 each - for five lucky children spotted carrying the bags at Glendale show.
Sheila Johnson, Waste Management Officer with Northumberland County Council, said: “If every child used that bag to replace a plastic carry bag twice per week when shopping etc, there would be quarter of a million carrier bags less in landfill EVERY year.”
The Glendale Show is at Wooler Show Ground on Bank Holiday Monday.
