Stock Judging of the Finest!

The Glendale Agricultural Society has announced earlier today that their annual stock judging evening will take place on Friday 11th July at Town Farm, Glanton by kind permission of the Guiry family. John Guiry is renowned for showing Scottish half- breds, having won many prime lamb and sheep classes in North Northumberland and The Borders.

The Glendale area of North Northumberland surrounding Wooler has always been prime livestock rearing and breeding country. And this stock judging evening reinforces The Society’s commitment to this important industry.

Sheep Judge on the evening will be Michael Aynsley of The Lee Farm and Wards Farm, and cattle judge is cattle and sheep breeder Henry Nelless of Thistleyhaugh Farm, near Longhorsley. The classes for participants to judge are:
• Commercial cows with calves at foot
• Aberdeen Angus bulling heifers
• Commercial ewes with lambs at foot
• Cheviot Mule gimmers
• Blue faced Leicester gimmers
• Prime lambs
• Novelty class (not sheep or cows)

John Guiry who has just been appointed chief livestock steward for the Glendale Show talks us thought the classes: “I am delighted to be hosting this evening and that The Glendale Agricultural Society is continuing to encourage people to learn this important skill. This is intended to be a social event for all the family, so in addition to the standard stock judging classes, there will be dedicated Young Farmers’ classes, a children’s class and a novelty class.

Stock judging explains to the competitors, the finer points of pedigree livestock breeding. It highlights what the breeders are looking for, and the essential traits that they want to see in their sheep and cattle. Chairman of the Glendale Agricultural Society, Tom Comber is keen to reiterate how important he feels stock judging is to livestock farming:

“Anyone interested in livestock farming really does need to know what makes a top quality breeding animal. By holding this evening we are showing our commitment to livestock farming and encouraging people to ensure that they have the knowledge and ability to identify the good and the bad points of livestock.”

The evening starts at 7 for 7.30 p.m. and hot beef rolls will be available to buy on the night. Entry is £2 per card and under 10s are free of charge.
