Ford & Etal Estates
Eight miles north of Wooler, this large landed estate, centred on the two villages of Ford and Etal, spans some 16000 acres and offers over 30 different activities and attractions, including a castle, celebrated murals, Flodden Battlefield, a fully operational water mill and – a must for many families – a narrow-gauge steam railway that runs nearly 2 miles along the river between Heatherslaw and Etal. Ford Moss Nature Reserve provides a combination of walking and wildlife, whilst the Visitor Centre at Heatherslaw offers self-guide leaflets for cycling and walking trails across the Estate, including cycle hire. Fishing and riding, history and heritage, family fun and peaceful riverside strolls … they are all waiting to be discovered at Ford & Etal.
